The linguistics categories “human” and “animal” are breaking down with recognition that there are non human persons with intelligence, compassion, language, culture and self recognition. Spain has passed a law, going into effect next year, giving rights to gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans. New Zealand adds Elephants, porpoise and whales to its list of persons with special rights.
As most of us know, dogs are more compassionate, loyal, and intuitive than most of our human friends. Isn’t it time we broaden our conception of what it means to be a person? For instance, I gave up the idea of “master”and “pet” for shaggy haired Millie. She and other animals in my life have been “friends”.
