As some of you know, I was lucky enough to be part of the civil rights movement. I was just posting a couple of old political buttons on my Ebay store and thought I should do a bit of quick research. Accuracy counts! I was startled by a wave of memories flooding over me.
Black activist, Fred Hampton, 21, was murdered by Chicago police in a pre-dawn raid on his apartment. His 19 year old wife, Deborah, who was 8 ½ months pregnant was also shot to death.
Houston 1970. Carl Hampton, community organizer, was inside the People’s Community Center when a street news vendor rushed in. The police didn’t want selling of the Black Power paper on the street. Fred and others emerged. A hail of bullets flew and Fred crumpled dead on the street.
I remember these men who were trying to bring power to the powerless. 40 plus year later I thought I might post something for them – especially in light of the events in Ferguson. You can Google and read up on the murders if you want.
