President Eisenhower in his farewell address warned about the Military Industrial complex growing so powerful it subverted American democracy. With the mad escalation of the Vietnam war, Ike’s ominous vision started to become true.
At that time RAT concentrated on the core question: “Who is making the decisions that affect our lives”? Shortly “national security” became the rational for suppressing dissent. But in every aspect of life, people challenged the authorities who were trying to maintain control. In the LBJ and Nixon’s years the efforts of those suppressing freedom were often ham fisted.. But the embryonic security state learned quickly and became much more sophisticated. It’s a process we reveal issue by issue in the RAT book.
Of course the Security State and the military industrial oligarchy behind it grew much more powerful. After 9 -11, operationally commanded by Saudi terrorists, the chimera of Weapons of Mass Destruction was created. Iraq not Saudi Arabia was invaded. Then Afghanistan. At a trillion of our tax dollars per. The arms manufacturers and the Security State enjoyed boom times.
The middle class was squeezed. A trillion dollars spent on our national infrastructure would have created created good jobs and made the country more competitive. The 1998 700 Billion dollar taxpayer bail out of the American banks prompted Occupy Wall Street to focus attention on the one per cent accumulating all the wealth. Today Bernie Sanders has caught fire raising the issues of wealth inequality and how working people through a structure of debts and regulations are more controlled than ever before in our history.
Reading each issue of the RAT in 1968-69 the building blocks of a government policy of “social control” becomes clear. People have asked me if this effort to compile the lessons learned in that period was “Nostalgia”? I reply SDS and the movement insisted “Let the People Decide” which means, Who is really making the decisions that control your life?
